Listen Unit 6: The environment

The Impact of Human Activities on Ocean Pollution

Our oceans are facing a severe crisis due to pollution caused by human activities. The majority of this pollution originates from land-based sources, primarily from human actions. Firstly, raw sewage is being pumped directly into the sea, with many countries, both developed and developing, contributing to this harmful practice. Secondly, ships are responsible for dumping approximately 6 million tons of garbage into the ocean each year. This not only poses a threat to marine life but also degrades the water quality. Thirdly, oil spills from ships further exacerbate the pollution levels in the ocean, leading to devastating consequences for the marine ecosystem. Moreover, waste materials from factories are being discharged without proper treatment, contaminating rivers that eventually flow into the sea. Lastly, oil leakage from land sources, whether accidental or deliberate, adds to the pollution burden on our oceans.

It is crucial for us to recognize the harmful impact of these activities and take immediate actions to mitigate ocean pollution. By implementing regulations, raising awareness, and promoting sustainable practices, we can work towards preserving the health of our oceans for future generations.
